Nonprofit and Institutional Video Production in Detroit, Michigan

Mission-driven organizations have strong stories and limited time to tell them. Visual Lion is a Metro Detroit video production company that helps nonprofits, foundations, associations, schools, and other institutions show the people and the work behind their mission, in videos that are ready for a gala screen, a grant report, or a phone.

We started from a simple belief: everyone has a story to tell. Our work for National Geographic, the Michigan Democratic Party, the Department of Defense Office of Small Business Programs, the City of Dearborn, and Wayne County has taught us how to turn real people and real programs into clear, honest films.

What we make for nonprofits and institutions

  • Mission and brand films. A two- to three-minute film that explains who you are, who you serve, and why it matters. The video you put on your homepage and show at every event.
  • Documentary storytelling. Longer, interview-driven pieces that follow a program, a community, or a person over time.
  • Fundraising and gala videos. Emotional, focused films built to play in the room before the ask, plus shorter versions for email and social.
  • Donor and impact stories. Short profiles of the people your programs help, the volunteers who make it happen, and the donors who fund it.
  • Event and conference coverage. Multi-camera coverage of annual meetings, summits, and community events, with recap reels.
  • Social content. Vertical cutdowns with captions for Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and LinkedIn.

Why organizations work with Visual Lion

Documentary work featured by National Geographic. Mohammed filmed documentary work for National Geographic's Remembering Lives Lost: COVID's Toll, a 2020 video of testimonies from families in three hard-hit U.S. communities who lost loved ones to COVID-19. He's credited by name in the film. Sitting with people on the hardest day of their lives and telling their story with care is the same skill a strong nonprofit film needs.

We know how to tell a story on a deadline. For the Michigan Democratic Party we produced 20+ videos in a single election cycle, including a documentary-style series from the 2024 DNC and a spotlight on Michigan's delegation. That same pace works for an organization with an annual gala, a campaign launch, or a grant deadline. See the MDP case study.

We can explain complex programs simply. For the DoD Office of Small Business Programs we produced training videos, executive interviews, and conference coverage that helped a federal office explain its programs to small business owners. Read the OSBP case study.

We make one shoot go further. On the Hammoud for Mayor campaign we planned seven video formats from one production strategy. For nonprofits that means a gala film, a website video, and a set of social clips can often come out of the same interviews and footage.

We're part of the community. We're based in Dearborn Heights and have produced public service video for the City of Dearborn and work for Wayne County.

Stories in English and Arabic

Many Metro Detroit organizations serve families who speak Arabic at home. We produce video in English and Arabic, with subtitles, voiceover, and on-camera direction in both languages, and we can accommodate other languages your community speaks. People open up more when they can tell their story in their own language. On one of our campaign projects, Arabic-subtitled video had 24% higher retention at the halfway point on social.

Our process

  1. Discovery. We learn about your mission, your audience, where the video will be shown, and what you want people to do after watching it (donate, volunteer, apply, attend).
  2. Story development. We identify the right voices, write interview questions, and draft an outline or script. We plan for consent, releases, and sensitivity when your subjects are clients, children, or vulnerable people.
  3. Production. Interviews, B-roll of your programs in action, aerial footage when it helps, and event coverage. We come to your sites and work around your programs.
  4. Edit and review. You see a rough cut and send notes. We refine the story, then finish with color, sound, music, graphics, and captions.
  5. Delivery. Files formatted for events, your website, YouTube, email, and social, plus caption files.

Deliverables and turnaround

Every project is scoped to your goals and budget, so we quote after a discovery call rather than posting fixed prices. Common deliverables include:

  • A main film (often two to five minutes) for your website and events
  • 30- and 60-second versions for social and email
  • Vertical 9:16 cutdowns with burned-in captions
  • Closed caption files (SRT/VTT) for accessibility
  • English and Arabic versions, with other languages available
  • Still frames or event photography for reports and newsletters
  • A B-roll package your communications team can reuse

For events, we can deliver a short recap soon after, with longer edits following on an agreed schedule. If you have a fixed date like a gala or board meeting, tell us early and we'll plan backwards from it.

Service area

We serve nonprofits and institutions in Detroit, Dearborn, and across Metro Detroit, including Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties, and we travel throughout Michigan. As a service-area business, we come to your offices, program sites, and events.

Frequently asked questions

Can you film interviews in Arabic? Yes. We produce video in English and Arabic, including interviews, subtitles, and voiceover, and can accommodate other languages your community speaks.

What kind of video should our nonprofit make first? For most organizations, a short mission film is the best first investment. It works on your website, at events, in grant applications, and in donor meetings, and it can be cut into social clips.

Can you make a fundraising video for our gala? Yes. We produce gala and fundraising films built to play in the room before the ask, plus shorter versions for email and social after the event.

How do you handle filming clients or vulnerable people? We plan consent and releases in advance, work with your staff on who appears on camera and how, and can protect identities when needed.

Can one shoot give us content for the whole year? Often, yes. We plan interviews and B-roll so a single production can yield a main film, short social pieces, and reusable footage for your team.
