Dearborn is one of the most distinctive places to make video in Michigan. It's a city with its own government, its own political life, a busy local business scene, and one of the best-known Arab American communities in the country. A video that works in Dearborn usually has to work in two languages and speak to people who can tell right away whether it was made by someone who knows the city.
Visual Lion is a Metro Detroit video production company, founded in 2009, and Dearborn has been a big part of our work. This page covers what we've made there, the kinds of projects we take on, and why local knowledge makes a real difference on screen.
Our work in Dearborn
City of Dearborn: public service and COVID-19 video
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Visual Lion produced public service and COVID-19 messaging video for the City of Dearborn. The goal was simple and urgent: get clear, trustworthy information to residents, many of whom are more comfortable in Arabic than in English.
You can watch two of those projects on our site: City of Dearborn — Public Service and COVID-19 Dearborn. Our homepage uses the public service film as an example of the production stage of our process, because it shows how planning, lighting, and framing come together on a real government project.
Hammoud for Mayor: seven campaign video formats
For Abdullah Hammoud's campaign for mayor of Dearborn, Visual Lion produced the full campaign video strategy: seven distinct video formats, each built for the platforms where it would run. Hammoud, who had served as State Representative for Michigan House District 15, was elected mayor on November 2, 2021, becoming the city's first Arab American and Muslim mayor.
The seven spots were:
- Launch Ad
- Walk and Talk
- Debate Plan
- Age Video with Zina
- Would You Vote For Me Claudia
- Primary Flooding Ad
- 15-Sec Non-Skippable
Together, the campaign's video assets generated more than 3.8 million impressions and reached more than 280,000 people. Two findings from that campaign shape how we plan Dearborn projects today. Arabic-subtitled video had a 26% higher view-through rate on pre-roll and OTT platforms, and 24% higher retention at the halfway point on social media. The full numbers are in the Hammoud for Mayor case study.
Bilingual English and Arabic production
Much of what we make in Dearborn is bilingual. Depending on the audience and budget, that can mean Arabic subtitles on an English video, an Arabic voiceover, a script written and performed in Arabic from the start, or parallel English and Arabic versions captured on the same shoot day. Our guide to Arabic and bilingual video for Dearborn and Metro Detroit goes into dialect, subtitle files, right-to-left graphics, and distribution in detail.
Types of video we produce in Dearborn
Campaign ads
Dearborn races are close to the ground. Voters often know the candidates, their families, and the neighborhoods they're talking about. Campaign video here works best when it feels personal: the candidate speaking directly to neighbors, real residents on camera, and local streets in the B-roll. We produce spots for broadcast, cable, streaming, and social, including the short vertical cuts and 15-second versions that performed so well for the Hammoud campaign. We work with campaigns of any party. See our political campaign video services.
Government and public outreach
Cities, school districts, and public agencies use video to explain services, share safety and health information, recruit staff, and recap public meetings. In Dearborn, that almost always means planning English and Arabic versions, with captions in each language. Our work for the City of Dearborn is part of a broader public-sector portfolio that also includes training and event video for the Department of Defense Office of Small Business Programs. Visual Lion LLC is SAM.gov registered. Learn more on our government video production page.
Brand commercials
Dearborn's restaurants, shops, professional practices, and service businesses often serve customers in more than one language. A brand commercial can do both: one production that delivers an English spot, an Arabic spot, and social cutdowns for each. You can see examples of our commercial work, such as the RE/MAX Michigan brand spot, in our video portfolio.
Events
Festivals, community gatherings, galas, conferences, and campaign rallies all make strong video, if the crew is in the right place at the right moment. We cover events with recap films, same-day social clips, and interview segments with attendees and speakers. Our event work includes coverage for the Michigan Democratic Party, from the 2024 Democratic National Convention to a rally headlined by President Barack Obama.
Why local knowledge matters
Anyone with a camera can film in Dearborn. Making video that Dearborn residents trust takes more.
Language is a creative decision. Arabic isn't one spoken language in daily life. Metro Detroit's Arabic-speaking families come from many countries, and choices about dialect, formal or conversational tone, and who reviews the script all affect how a message lands. We plan those choices at the script stage, not at the end.
People open up to crews who understand them. Interviews go better when subjects can speak in the language they're most comfortable in, and when the crew understands customs that affect filming, such as who is comfortable appearing on camera and how to schedule around religious holidays.
Recognizable places build credibility. Viewers notice when a "local" video was clearly shot somewhere else. Filming on real Dearborn streets, in local businesses, and with real community members makes the message feel like it belongs to the people watching.
The numbers back it up. The Hammoud campaign results showed that reaching Arabic-speaking viewers in a way that felt made for them paid off in how long people kept watching.
How a Dearborn project works with Visual Lion
Every project is led hands-on by founder Mohammed Al-mawla, from the first concept to the final color grade. A typical project follows three stages:
- Strategy. We define the goal, the audience, the languages, and where the video will run.
- Production. We plan angles, light, and equipment, direct on-camera talent in English or Arabic, and capture everything each version will need.
- Distribution. We deliver finished files in every format you need, from broadcast masters to vertical social cuts with burned-in captions.
